Platen Tape / Pallet Tape

A paper platen tape for garment screen printing — plain paper with a rubber pressure-sensitive adhesive on the platen side and a release-treated back. It goes down as a replaceable facing that keeps spray adhesive, ink and lint off the board.

Songyang platen tape — sold in the trade as pallet tape, platen paper or pallet paper — is a single-side paper tape built for textile screen printing presses. The rubber adhesive holds the facing to aluminum, steel or wooden platens; the paper surface is where the shop applies its own platen adhesive for garment hold. When the facing is loaded with spray adhesive and ink, it lifts off in one piece and a new length goes down, so the platen itself stays clean. Coating, slitting and inspection run in-house at Songyang's Dongguan, China plant — 28 years in the tape and film business, 16 production lines — which is why overseas print shops buy this consumable factory-direct instead of through a trading layer.

Key Features

Why Songyang Platen Tape

Flat White Paper Face

A uniform plain-paper surface at 130 μm ± 10 μm total thickness. Flat enough to hold registration marks and to keep print pressure even across the platen.

No Liner, Peel and Replace

The back of the paper is release-treated, so the roll unwinds without blocking and there is no liner to strip, store or throw away at the press.

Rubber Adhesive on the Platen Side

A rubber-based pressure-sensitive adhesive holds the facing through squeegee passes, garment loading and press vibration, and still lifts off when the job changes.

Rolls Matched to Platen Widths

500 / 610 / 650 mm (19.7 / 24 / 25.6 in) at 100 m (109 yd) per roll — about 9 percent more length than a 100 yd pallet tape, so a roll lasts longer between changes.

Roll width is chosen against the board, not the print area: the facing should be wide enough to wrap the platen edges, so a 24 in (610 mm) platen takes the 650 mm roll. Confirm the width with Songyang's sales team when quoting.

How the Facing Works on the Press

Platen tape is a consumable, and it only does its job when the layers are understood in order. The sequence below is what the shop sees on the board, from the platen up to the garment.

Songyang platen tape is applied adhesive-side down, straight onto the platen, and the paper face becomes the new working surface. Because the paper carries no adhesive of its own, the garment is held by the platen adhesive the shop applies on top — the same water-based or spray adhesive used before the facing was fitted.

  • Platen: aluminum, steel or wooden board
  • Adhesive side: rubber pressure-sensitive adhesive, laid onto the board
  • Paper face: release-treated, not tacky
  • Platen adhesive: applied by the print shop over the paper
  • Garment: loaded onto that adhesive

Please note: platen tape is not a double-sided tape. The paper face will not hold a garment on its own, and the product is not a substitute for platen adhesive.

Paper platen tape applied to a screen printing platen with the corner being lifted

Printers set centre lines, platen edges and repeat positions directly on the facing with a pencil or marker. Because the surface is flat paper rather than film, the marks stay visible without smearing under the squeegee, and a new mark can be made the moment a job changes. On multi-colour work the facing also protects the registration the shop has already dialled in — the board underneath never has to be re-cleaned between colours.

Pencil marking a centre line on paper platen tape over a printing platen

A facing that is heavy with spray adhesive and ink gets replaced rather than scrubbed. The operator lifts one corner, pulls the paper back at a low angle so it comes away in a single sheet, wipes the board if adhesive has crept past the edges, and lays a new length. That is the whole maintenance cycle — no solvent wash of the platen, and no scraping of cured adhesive off aluminum.

  • Change interval: set by ink and adhesive build-up, not by a calendar
  • Handling: the paper peels in one piece at a low pull angle
  • Clean-up: wipe the board before the next length goes down
Peeling a used paper platen facing off a screen printing platen
  1. Clean and dry. Remove old adhesive, ink and lint from the platen; the board must be dry before the facing goes down.
  2. Cut slightly oversize. Allow the paper to run past the platen edges so it can wrap and be trimmed, rather than stopping short and leaving a bare strip.
  3. Lay from one end. Press a short length down at one end, then work along the board while a squeegee card pushes air out ahead of the adhesive.
  4. Trim and settle. Cut the overhang at the platen edge, press the wrap flat, and let the facing settle before the first print.

FAQ

Common Questions

Who is Songyang, and where is the platen tape made?
Dongguan Songyang New Material Technology Co., Ltd. is a China-based manufacturer of specialty adhesive tapes and protective films, based in Houjie, Dongguan, Guangdong. Songyang has worked in the industry since 1998 — 28 years — and runs a 9,000+ m² plant with 16 production lines, 5,000+ product specifications and 5,600+ customers served. This paper platen tape is coated and slit at the Dongguan plant and shipped to screen printing and garment buyers worldwide.
What is platen tape used for in screen printing?
Platen tape — also called pallet tape, platen paper or pallet paper — is a replaceable paper facing applied to the print surface of a textile screen printing press. In Songyang's paper grade the facing keeps spray adhesive, ink and lint off the aluminum, steel or wooden platen, so the board does not need solvent scrubbing between jobs: the press operator peels the loaded facing off and lays a new length down.
Is this the same product as pallet tape or platen paper?
Yes. Songyang supplies one product under several trade names — platen tape, pallet tape, platen paper, pallet paper and bench paper describe the same paper-based facing in this range. The construction does not change with the name: white plain paper, rubber pressure-sensitive adhesive on one side, release-treated back, no liner.
Does the paper side have adhesive, or does it hold garments on its own?
No. Songyang's platen tape is adhesive on the platen side only, and the paper face is release-treated rather than tacky. Garment hold comes from the platen adhesive the print shop applies over the paper, so this product should not be specified as a double-sided tape or as a replacement for platen spray adhesive.
What widths and roll lengths are standard?
Songyang ships platen tape in 500 mm, 610 mm and 650 mm widths (about 19.7, 24 and 25.6 in) at 100 m (109 yd) per roll, which covers most manual and automatic textile platens when the facing is wrapped edge to edge. Other widths and roll lengths are quoted on consultation, slit from 1,250 mm master rolls at the Dongguan plant.
What temperature can the platen tape withstand?
Songyang rates this platen tape at 80 °C (176 °F) for a 30-minute exposure, which covers normal press and platen-adhesive conditions. Flash-cure units and conveyor dryers run far hotter at the surface, so Songyang recommends testing a short length against your actual cure cycle before committing to a production run.
Paper or polyester pallet tape, which should I choose?
Paper pallet tape is the economical choice: it lies flat, takes pencil registration marks and peels off in one piece, which suits shops that change the facing often. Polyester pallet tape resists heat and tearing better and is normally picked for high-volume automatic presses. Songyang quotes the paper grade described on this page, and its sales team will confirm whether a different construction fits your press.
How is platen tape applied and removed?
Clean and dry the platen, cut the facing slightly larger than the board, then lay it from one end while a squeegee card pushes air out ahead of the adhesive; trim the overhang and let it settle before printing. Removal is the reverse: lift a corner and pull the facing back at a low angle, then wipe the platen if adhesive has crept past the edges.
Can Songyang print our logo and pack to our specification?
Songyang supports private-label platen tape with printed cores, labels and cartons, plus custom widths and roll lengths, produced at its Dongguan plant. Logo files, minimum quantities and packaging formats are confirmed with the sales team before a quotation is issued, because the paper grade and the print method set the practical limits.
How do I get a quotation or a sample of platen tape?
Email [email protected] or message Songyang on WhatsApp with the platen width, roll length, estimated monthly volume and any print or packaging requirement. Songyang replies with a quotation and a technical suggestion, usually within 24 hours, and can send a sample length so the shop can test it against its own platen adhesive.
